While using this air purifier, everyone in the family has felt a noticeable improvement in the air quality. As a result, there was less flare-ups of allergies and sickness.

Observations:

Three filters to do triple duty: a true HEPA filter, a carbon filter (washable) and a pre-filter.
Very quiet, even on its highest setting. There is a ‘Silent Mode’ option that gives MAJOR silence.
Peace of mind knowing that it really works – an indicator lights up if the machine senses high levels of pollutants, after which it will automatically increase fan speed to clear the air.
Solid construction, although the plastic casing might suggest otherwise.
The auto shut-off timer is very convenient. You can choose from 2 – 4 – 8 hour intervals.
There’s also 3 fan speeds to choose from. The highest speed comes in handy during summer.
It has reduced dust build-up in the house.
Sharp FPP60CX HEPA-Filter Air Purifier comes with a remote control that runs on AA batteries. But it’s not completely dependent on the remote control, as you can also use the buttons on the unit itself.
Has a one-year limited warranty.
Easy interface makes it very user-friendly.

Overall, I was very pleased with this air purifier. It’s not the least expensive on the market but it’s well worth investing a little more for some peace of mind and knowing you’ll sleep better every night.

Also, it’s one of the better-looking air purifiers out there, in a sleek, minimal design.

The Whirlpool Whispure 450 is a good product priced in the middle range that outperforms a lot of other air purifiers in its class.

Pros:

Very quiet machine, especially on low setting. After a day or two, it becomes ‘white noise’ and you won’t even know it’s there.
Great performance. Everyone at home has been sneezing a lot less and able to breathe better.
Efficient in removing dust and smoke.
Convenient to move around. It weighs 32 pounds so it’s not too heavy to move around from room to room.
Does not emit ozone.
Blows air upwards instead of outwards.
Has a filter light to indicate replacement of filter and pre-filter.
Low maintenance – the main filter needs to be changed once a year and the carbon filter, 4 times a year. It’s available online for more convenience.
One year limited warranty, with the motor guaranteed against burnout for four years.

Cons:

Filters can be a bit pricey, setting you back a hundred bucks or so. It needs to be changed at least once a year, or twice depending on how often you use it.
Bland design. It’s a boxy, bulky design typical of most filters, which I think could be improved. Since it’s practically part of the furniture, I wish they’d give more thought to design and make it more aesthetically pleasing.

Conclusion:
Great value for its price, especially since it’s a Whirlpool. Whirlpool Whispure 450 works like a dream and has made everyone in the family a lot healthier and happier. The only gripe would be maintenance with expensive filter replacements. But you get what you pay for.

Furnace filter: 3M Filtrete Ultra Allergen Filter

We decided to purchase a furnace filter to further strengthen our ongoing war with allergens and pollutants in our home. After scooping around, we went with the 3M Filtrete Ultra Allergen Filter as it had received good ratings online.

The 3M Filtrete Filter is an inexpensive and convenient way to rid your home of allergens.

It carries a high MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating of 11, which is well above average (the MERV rating was designed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers for easy comparison of filters).

It also meets the American Lung Association Health House Indoor Air Quality Guidelines.

Since installing the 3M Filtrete Ultra Allergen Filter, my husband has been sleeping better and waking up without the usual sinus congestion. I’ve also noticed that there’s less dust settling stop shelves and books. I credit this to the filter preventing debris from escaping the furnace.

Being an allergen filter, it’ll keep the dust out but it won’t filter any odour around the house. You’re going to need an air purifier for that.

One thing to be on the lookout for, the 3M Filtrete Filter will affect airflow if it’s coated in dust and particles since it’s attached to the furnace.

Not a big cause for concern though. You simply need to consistently check that it’s time for a filter replacement and voila! say ‘hello’ to an instant improvement in air quality.

If you suffer from mild allergies, I recommend giving the 3M Filtrete Ultra Allergen Filter a go before splurging on an expensive air purifier. At least with this furnace filter, you KNOW you’re actually straining the dust and allergens that are coming into the house.

Whirlpool Whispure AP51030S – Air purifier for smaller rooms

The Whirlpool Whispure AP51030S is on the expensive side, but it has proven itself to be well worth the price.

Within an hour of switching it on, everyone in the house felt a significant difference in the air quality.

It may not be enough for large living rooms, but it’s ideal for bedrooms. The ‘sleep’ function is particularly useful. The machine automatically switches to a low level for 8 hours before going back to its previous setting.

Best part is, it’s so quiet. I’m a very light sleeper and I couldn’t hear a peep from the Whirlpool Whispure AP51030S, which stands about 2 feet from me.

The Whirlpool Whispure AP51030S uses a true HEPA filter that traps pollutants as air passes through the unit. A carbon filter traps odors while a pre-filter catches dust and debris.

You’ll need to clear the pre-filter while the internal filter will need changing a couple of times a year. Filters are quite expensive but worth it.

It sucks the air in from the front and blows it out from the top. I found that to be a nice touch instead of having air blown at you. It also feels more hygienic this way.

I credit its dual filter system for going that extra mile in sucking dust out from the air. There is also an optional charcoal filter available for weeding out chemicals.

Once you actually touch this machine, you’ll know that it was built to last. The only gripe I have would be the buttons, which are plastic bubble buttons. Feels a bit cheap to me, considering the price tag.

Overall, I recommend the Whirlpool Whispure AP51030S to anyone with allergies and pets.

Honeywell Enviracaire 50250 – Air cleaner for very small rooms

We use it everyday and sometimes move it between rooms, since it’s such a small convenient size and weighs 22 pounds.

It has been running about 15 hours a day, everyday for the last 5 months and is still working very well without the need for filter change.

Honeywell Enviracaire 50250 is very affordable for a HEPA air purifier and doesn’t take up a lot of space. It’s small, compact and round; nothing like other air purifiers resembling a tank.

It has a permanent 99.97% HEPA filter that can be vacuum-cleaned and put back in the machine. This is so convenient and actually saves money in the long-run, since it eliminates the need to purchase HEPA filter replacements.

There is also a light indicator to let you know when it’s time for a filter change. The HEPA filter only needs to be vacuumed twice a year.

It sucks a lot of air and blows cool air out, which is nice during summer when we’re hesitant about provoking our allergies by using the air conditioner or fan.

The downside is how noisy it is on the highest setting. I don’t mind too much since its benefits clearly outweigh the slight noise it makes. At least this way we know it works!

On low setting, it makes a soft, soothing noise similar to a fan. There are 3 speed options to choose from.

Honeywell Enviracaire 50250 is a great machine at an affordable price. I would recommend it for small spaces since it’s a small machine. The noise is a small price to pay for healthier living. Plus, it’s so compact and doesn’t require as much costly maintenance as typical air purifiers.

Alen A350 – Best Value Air Purifier

The Alen A350 is one of the more modestly priced air purifiers on the market. It doesn’t require a lot of space, weighing a light 16 pounds and measuring 8.5 inches wide.

The Alen A350 has four speed settings to choose from and a convenient timer that auto shuts off the purifier.

Instead of having a few separate filters, the A350 has a combination pre-filter, HEPA filter and carbon filter that have been doing an excellent job in clearing the air of dust and pollen.

The filter needs to be replaced twice a year (depending on use). There is an indicator that will notify you when it’s time, so there won’t be any guessing games here.

I also like that I only need to purchase one filter instead of a few. This saves me time and money instead of having to buy a different filter every few months.

The Alen A350 isn’t as noisy as some air purifiers, even at its highest setting. On its lowest setting, it barely makes a sound.

Its construction is pretty solid and doesn’t feel like it would fall apart anytime. Its simple design makes it blend into a room, unlike typical boxy, bulky air machines.

The control panel on the Alen A350 is very user-friendly, with simple buttons shown on a digital display.

It does its magic on rooms that are up to 800 square feet, which is very reasonable considering its small size.

It doesn’t remove odors, so you should have realistic expectations for this model.

Overall, the Alen A350 gives excellent value for money. It is one of the more affordable air purifiers out there that boast a great reputation. The family has since had an improved quality of life thanks to the A350.

IQAir HealthPro – Best air purifier overall

My 16-year old son and husband have both suffered from severe allergies all year round. Needless to say, when Spring rolls around, things take a turn for the worse. Allergy shots can only do so much and I didn’t feel comfortable with them taking so much allergy medication on a regular basis. So we decided to take a healthier approach by investing in a top-of-the-line air purifier – IQAir HealthPro.

The IQAir HealthPro has since made life bearable again for our home and we can’t imagine going a day without it. It was normal for my son to sneeze a dozen times a day while my husband would wake up with sinus lasting all morning. Since the IQAir HealthPro, it would be unusual if my son sneezed even ONCE and if my husband woke up with as much as a sniffle!

Before the IQAir, we had a strict rule against having pets over. But some friends brought their cat along for a visit and incredibly, nobody wound up with teary eyes or blocked noses.

(a) Where will you use the machine? – Most models are pretty portable, which you can rotate usage in various parts of your house. You can even bring it on vacation, there are models that weigh as light as 4 pounds, although the quality may be a bit compromise, it does do the basic things an air purifier should. If you are looking to put it in a permanent place in your house (like the living room), you can get the regular sized type. Position the air purifier close to a socket outlet and make sure it is at least 3″ from the wall for air circulation.

(b) Unit’s capacity – This will depend on the size of the area where you will put your air purifier. Usually machines are rated for its efficiency based on certain room sizes, so you cannot expect a model built to circulate a 300 sq feet area to perform the same way in a 800 sq feet area. The number of times per hour that volume of air passes through the unit also determines its efficiency. Therefore, before shopping, you should measure you’re the area’s dimension and buy accordingly to the coverage area of the model (or higher). You may want special features like multiple settings, so look for a model that has it.

(c) Type of Filtration – The more filtration devices in a purifier makes it a better model. There is the pre-filter and the Hepa (known as carbon filters). The pre-filter will trap larger particles of dust, and then the Hepa will further remove about 98% of airborne particles. Each stage of filtration means more removal of the air irritants, hence the better air quality.

(d) Availability of Filters – It is advisable to buy from the makers that have most buyers for uncommon brand may give you difficulty in finding replacement filters. Although the manufacturer has a recommendation as to the timeframe a filter will last, it is good to have a rule of thumb that Hepa filters can last about 17-35 months and a pre-filter lasts about 7-14 months, depending on the size of your purifier. Do get a spare replacement set when you purchase your entire purifier.

(e) Certification and Standards – Air purifiers that come with multi or Hepa standard filters are very pricey. Therefore, be very alert when purchasing. Make sure you check the unit for certification by the authorized party, efficiency ratings and that it meets the standards of its line. You should also find out if there is a parts list because it could be of help when you need replacements later.

(f) Making the most out of it – Hepa filters, as you would have known by now, are more expensive. In order to protect it, change the pre-filter regularly. An air purifier will work more efficiently if the door is closed and getting a unit built for a larger circulation area can better clean a small room. Another tip is to set it to ‘quiet’ at night and ‘high’ for daytime if you put the unit in a bedroom. An air purifier should run throughout the day so that you get better quality air all the time.

Why need air purifier? Well, usually air purifiers are used by people who have allergies or related health conditions but now families are more aware of how bad air affects the health and many are buying the machine for normal use. I resisted buying one because I believed that cleaning my house, keeping the doors and windows shut always would help keep the pollution out. The truth is the environment inside our home could be six times more polluted than the outdoors. If you, like me have an older model of a heating and cooling system, it is likely to not have a modern filter system and as this machine works, it actually brings in outdoor irritants and pollen into the air of the home. Our dog sheds fur continuously, and we also shed skin cells all the time. These dead skin cells are food for dust mites (we feed the enemy!), and dust mites can cause asthma, allergies and skin irritations.

While cleaning the home is a natural act, I found out that cleaning chemicals contain ammonia which is bad for the ozone. Ozone inside could be worse than the ozone layer in the sky. This is because the small area of your home increases the chances for inside ozone to affect your lungs, worsen asthma attacks and may trigger symptoms of lung problems.
